Tri-sport tourney to benefit First Nations children

When we think of low income towns and cities in the more southerly parts of Ontario there are at least some programs and or means of obtaining access to recreation programs for children. This is not the case in Kasabonik.

This has prompted me to organize an initiative that I have called P. L. a. A. Y. O. N (Promoting Leisure among Aboriginal Youth in Ontario's North) that will be used to develop recreational activities on reserves in Ontario.

The first event, from which P. L. a. A. Y. O. N. will benefit is a tri-sport tournament that will be held on Sept. 21 beginning at 9 a. m. at Fellowes High School.

Challenging a nation to hit the gym

Phil Fontaine, 63, is the national chief of the Assembly of First Nations. At the AFN's annual general assembly in mid-July, he challenged first nation chiefs across Canada to commit to three months of daily physical activity. "One of the reasons for the challenge is to promote the idea of good health," he said. "We know that first nations experience diabetes at three times the rate of the general Canadian population, and so I'm hoping leadership will set an example through their participation in this challenge."

The group, which included Assembly of First Nations National Chief Phil Fontaine, had come together to discuss increasing opportunities for sports and recreation in Aboriginal communities.

Listuguj welcomes youth athletes home

Listuguj - Athletes from Listuguj who attended the North American Indigenous Games in British Columbia were given a rousing welcome home on Aug. 12.

When the athletes arrived by bus, they were greeted outside Wysote's store by Chief Allison Metallic and others, after which they were taken across the street and seated in a float. With a police car in the lead, they were then taken in a procession of horn-honking cars and trucks around Listuguj. The procession ended at the Elders' Lodge, where a lunch had been prepared for them and parents and friends were waiting.

Native snowboarders reach for podium

Vancouver — While Canada's summer Olympians compete in Beijing, a group of young natives is inching closer to its own Olympic dream. On Saturday and Sunday, members of the B.C.-based First Nations Snowboard Team will head to Vancouver for a training camp to prepare for the coming season. The team's goal: to have an athlete on the podium at the 2010 Winter Games.

Congratulations to EDN Athletes!

The Eastern Door and the North (composed of Cree, Mohawk, Innu and other First Nations Youth in Quebec) were honoured today at the closing ceremonies and received an honorary award called the John Fletcher Spirit Award which is presented to the team that best demonstrates the spirit of teamwork, fair play, respect, and integrity throughout the competition. Congratulations to the Eastern Door and the North!


Deputy Grand Chief Ashley Iserhoff (middle row center) attended the games, saying it was an honour to witness the youth participate, and an inspiration to see the support of parents, coaches and the many volunteers in Cowachin, BC.
